2004 DARPA GRAND CHALLENGE

DARPA, for the inaugural run of the Grand Challenge, offered a $1 million prize to the robotics team that could create a vehicle that could navigate and maneuver itself through a 175-mile obstacle course in the Mohave Desert. After watching the most successful candidate strand itself up on a beam after traversing a mere 7.4 miles of the course, DARPA declared that no team had met the Grand Challenge requirements.
